With the help of fabiopigi (found the specific file), Snowbird (helped me convert binary to text) and m_101 (For figuring out which part of the code to edit).
All you have to do is download the /System/Library/Frameworks/Celestial.framework/SystemSoundVibrationPatterns.plist
file off of your iPhone (I used iBrickr) and covert it from binary to text.
http://140.124.181.188/~khchung/cgi-bin/plutil.cgi (conversion tool supplied by Snowbird)
UPDATE FOR 2.0!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot seem to get this hack working right now. I am searching for a solution and I will get back as soon as I have figured it out.
Once you have the file converted, open it with Notepad or any PLAIN TEXT text editor.
You will find a section of code that looks like this:
<key>Default</key>
<dict>
<key>Intensity</key>
<real>1</real>
<key>OffDuration</key>
<real>0.10000000000000001</real>
<key>OnDuration</key>
<real>0.40000000000000002</real>
<key>TotalDuration</key>
<real>0.5</real>
</dict>
Change the
<real>0.40000000000000002</real>
To
<real>4.40000000000000002</real>
Save the file and upload. BE SURE YOUR FILE EXTENSION READS .plist and not .plist.txt . You will be good to go. Any action that calls on the DEFAULT text duration will be changed to the longer vibrate setting. You can adjust the number to your liking. changing from .4 to 4.4 givs it about a 5 - 6 second vibrate.
EDIT: Be sure and reboot your phone after uploading the file for the changes to take effect. Also, here is an already modded file that I will share for those who do not want to go through the trouble of modding it yourself.

Forgot to mention that I am doing all of this on a PC. I have no idea how to do it on a mac. I am sure that someone can covert these simple steps to Mac.

Tnx m8 ! ;) ... How long makes this moded file vibrate the iphone ? :D

ok then, here's the easy way to do it on a mac
activate wifi and ssh on your iPhone, and be on same wifi network with your mac
start fugu
ssh into the phone - all that "root" and "dottie" stuff...
go to ...
/System/Library/Frameworks/Celestial.framework/
and upload the file one4house linked into the directory
restart your iPhone and enjoy actually getting your text messages on time! :D
if you want to alter the duration of your vibration, just alter the number between the <real> strings in the OnDuration bit, so that it matches the time in seconds you want the phone to vibrate for. for instance mine vibrates for 1.5 seconds when I get a text message. easy peasy.

oooops forgot to add
the OffDuration works like a delay
so say you wanted to have a 15 second delay before your iPhone vibrated when you got text message (not 100% sure if this would affect calls, but yes it probably would), you could edit the plist for the OffDuration to be <real>15.100000...1</real>
then the phone would get the text message and chime accordingly, and 15 seconds later the phone would vibrate.
also make sure to keep the TotalDuration the sum of the OffDuration and OnDuration strings.

Hi,
I'm using the SuperSim method in Australia, on Telstra Network.
Today I recived an sms, there was no number just some characters.
When I started to view the sms it brought be back to the main menue (the one when you press the home button).
Friends messaged me as well, i could see the previw but when I went again to sms, it tried to access and went back to the main menue.
Is there any software or way to connect my iPhone to my PowerBook Mac G4 and to access the sms folder by this way and to delet the sms I got which causes the problem?
Is this maybe a virus? A bug ore something else?
Thank you for any help!!!
Cheers

Any chance this file could be altered to set up a reminder. ie, if you miss the first message notification, then it would repeat every 5 mins until you read it. Most phones I've owned do this, and its quite annoying the iPhone doesn't have this function.

i have now noticed why apple made this vibrate very short, it is an absolute battery hog:0. Battery life is seriously reduced by this being on for such a long time. As it also vibrates when you send messages as well it will kill your battery as fast as you can say "its drained." I have my mp3 message alert go on for 45 seconds so i never miss it:) And at least i will have some battery left:)

This mod adjust the duration of the DEFAULT vibrate settings. Anything that used the DEFAULT short vibrate will be set to the longer vibrate duration. I am sorry to report that I have not looked into the other vibrate settings. IF I get some free time I may play around with the settings and see what I can do. As of now, it is looking like a packed week.

10-09-2007, 01:34 AM
Georgie, I don't understand...
this does affect silent mode as far as I can tell. My iPhone seems to vibrate for the same amount of time when I get a text whether it is in silent mode or not...
also yes battery drain is slightly worse for me. I put mine on so it vibrates for 2 seconds then has a pause of 0.5 seconds. That's good enough for me as the pause thing is used mainly when receiving a call.
I'm just trying to work on a way to see if I can get it to vibrate twice (as in 2 pulses of 2 seconds) when I get a text, possibly by duplicating the plist code.
If it works, I'll let you all know.

Noted. Thanks. .4 is not long enough for me to notice. That is why I changed the settings to vibrate longer. I do not care about battery life as much as getting my messages in due time.

m_101,
what I mean is that when the vibrate function is used as apposed audible ringer, the vibrate duration is too short and the call is often missed.

I agree with Georgie and I'm looking to do the same thing.
I think what he's trying to say is that we need the vibration to be longer (changed) when we receive a phone call and the ringer is turned all the way down/silent mode.
I do understand that the hack above changes the vibration notice when you receive a SMS message, a Scheduler reminder and/or a new email notice, but it doesn't affect the actual phone call vibration.
BTW, great work on the SMS vibe!

ahh ok, I think I get what you mean
mine seems to work fine when in silent mode.
did you adjust the TotalDuration so that it is the sum of the OnDuration and OffDuration?
ie mine is like this ...
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<key>TotalDuration</key>
<real>0.50000000000000002</real>

</dict>
</plist>
I think that might be the fault... cause when I receive a call, the iPhone vibrates for 0.75 seconds, then switches off for 0.25 seconds, then this cycle repeats as long as the phone is still ringing.
As for text messages, there is a delay of 0.25 seconds (not noticeable), and then the phone vibrates for 0.75 seconds.
The vibration pattern (for me at least) is independent of whether the phone is on silent mode or not...
edit: still trying to get the phone to do 2 pulses of vibration when a text is received.
Georgie

The vibration pattern (for me at least) is independent of whether the phone is on silent mode or not...You are correct. Now in silent mode, vibrate pulses as you described based on the intensity settings of the offduration and onduration strings.
Once again, great find regarding this file modification. This solves the annoying problem of missing messages / mail etc due to the original short vibrate pulse setting. Power depletion is a small price to pay. As one4house reiterated, most of us are more interested in getting out messages in due time.
m_101
10-09-2007, 11:44 PM
woohooo!
ok worked it out...
see the TotalDuration part of the string, all you need to do to make the phone vibrate for a pulse, then stop, then vibrate again for a pulse (whether in silent mode or not) is adjust the TotalDuration <real> strings for the DEFAULT setting...
something like this
<key>Default</key>
<dict>
<key>Intensity</key>
<real>1</real>
<key>OffDuration</key>
<real>0.25000000000000001</real>
<key>OnDuration</key>
<real>0.75000000000000002</real>
<key>TotalDuration</key>
<real>2.0</real>
</dict>
therefore the offduration is 0.25, the onduration is 0.75, this repeats twice since the total duration is 2.0 seconds.
easy peasy.
Personally, I just wanted to do this since I think a pulsed vibration is more noticeable than a continuous vibration for a set amount of time. But in theory you could have 0.1 seconds off then 0.4 seconds on, repeated 4 times to a total of 2 seconds... just alter the totalduration strings to make it happen!

Good mod. I've got mine off for 0.25 secs. on for 0.75 secs for a total pulse duration of 3 times <real>3.0</real>
woohooo!

So it would vibrate one second every minute for an hour, someone sees a problem with this?
Thanks

hhhmmmmmm..............anyone try it?
Georgie, wanna give it a whirl? LOL
I tried it and it does not work, I settled in this config:
<dict>
<key>Intensity</key>
<real>1</real>
<key>OffDuration</key>
<real>1.10000000000000001</real>
<key>OnDuration</key>
<real>0.50000000000000002</real>
<key>TotalDuration</key>
<real>10.4</real>
</dict>
Interesting things I noticed :
- if you put a non valid value in this plist you cannot send sms messages, the phone gives a sending error.
- if you use a long value for the TotalDuration, the phone keeps vibrating even if you read/ignore the message.

make sure the username you are using to connect to the iPhone is "root"
I've accidentally tried to connect with my normal mac username a couple times
also yes peu you appear to be right.
I wouldn't recommend putting an hour as your totalduration. if you're still needing a longer alert, you can put a second string in, so that you get a delay of a minute and then a second vibration.
something like this...
<key>Intensity</key>
<real>1</real>
<key>OffDuration</key>
<real>1.10000000000000001</real>
<key>OnDuration</key>

<key>OnDuration</key>

<key>TotalDuration</key>

Does anyone know if there is a setting so i get vibration when receiving a sms, but no sound?
If i have sound on(for sms) the phone vibrates, but if i turn off the sound for receiving sms, the vibration turns off also. I want vibration but no sound when receiving sms.
And not using the silence button, since i still want sound for incoming calls.

I miss some cool features from my old cell phone, a W800i Sony Ericsson.
This mod solves one of the things I miss (don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with my iPhone).
So for those who do feel like me, here is my setting that mimic SE phones vibration when receiving an SMS message:

<key>OffDuration</key>
<real>0.20000000000000001</real>

<real>0.20000000000000002</real>
<key>TotalDuration</key>

Hey guys. Very interesting mod! However, I edited the file for pulse etc etc and went to upload it to my phone via AFPd and the original SystemSoundVibrationPatterns.plist is nowhere to be found. I'm running 1.1.4. Anyone else have this problem? And also when I go to copy the file over anyway it says the filename is too long. I've tried shortening to copy it and then change it back but no luck at all. Whats going on?
Thanks in advance

1st gen phones seem to lose the ability to vibrate after changing the file. I have no idea why. (Is it just my phone?) When I change the file back to stock settings I get the vibrate back. Someone else will have to figure this one out. I am in the middle of finals for my summer semester.

In Cydia you can find the Repo in the Repository Categorie and the Repo Pack: "iPhone-notes.de"
The Packs unter "Tweaks 2.0"
TY for point that out. That is far easier than this tweak. I loved this tweak, but it is dead and gone as far as I am concerned. This is far easier.

1st gen phones seem to lose the ability to vibrate after changing the file. I have no idea why. (Is it just my phone?) When I change the file back to stock settings I get the vibrate back. Someone else will have to figure this one out. I am in the middle of finals for my summer semester.
I tried it today in 2.0.
Don't work. Modifying the file leaves me with no vibration at all!
Its worked beautifully in 1.1.4

No cydia yet....
I pwned with WinPwn 2.0.0.1 and Cydia didn't work. Lazy to do a 2.0.0.2.
The iTunes backing up taking friggin long.

Perhaps this needs to be it's own thread, but it's relevant, so I'll ask it here. Mods move me if need be plz.
The .plist hack works like a charm. I can SSH in and set my Default vibrate to be 2 or 3 pulses and it's awesome. However, I want to have a DIFFERENT pattern for SMS alert and Mail alerts.
Say 3 short pulses for SMS and 1 pulse for Mail notification. It makes sense that the 'DEFAULT' behavior in the .plist that we've been modifying is being called by some other .plist that I can't find.
In theory I'm thinking I could set the SystemSoundVibrationPatterns.plist to be a single pulse, and then modify code elsewhere to have the SMS call on the Default behavior 3 times, thus giving 3 pulses!
Whatcha think? Where can I find the code to modify the 'call' on SystemSoundVibrationPatterns.plist that the SMS is performing?
Thx!
EDIT:
QUESTION MOVED TO ITS OWN THREAD

Did you use the package from installer or SSHed the modded .plist file.

I SSHed in, downloaded the native .plist file, copied it, converted it, opened with text-edit, changed the code, then re-uploaded to my phone via SSH.
All this done on a Mac

Can someone host the file for the triple ring and tell me which directory it goes into? I am no longer interested in loading Cydia , Installer or 3rd party apps in my phone. The only thing I want is to be able to make the Vibrate change on my text alert.
Thanks in advance,
A
